Set up your IT account and tech

Choosing a laptop

If you already have a laptop or computer, check it against our recommended requirements

We expect most students to fund their own IT equipment, but understand that for some students this will be very difficult. If you will genuinely struggle to do so, you can apply for support to buy a laptop.

You can also download free software as a Kent student, including Microsoft Office 365, which will be essential for your studies.

University emails

At university you will receive lots of emails. It's important to check your university email account regularly so you can stay up to date. Example emails you might receive are:

  • Your lecturer or seminar leader getting in touch to let you know about a room change.
  • The My Kent Weekly email newsletter with key info, support and events for the following week.
  • Your Academic Adviser checking in and letting you know the date of your next Academic Advising meeting.

Email top tips

✅ Check your email regularly (at least a few times per week) so you don't miss important information.

📁 It can be helpful to set up folders for different modules, so you can stay organised and on top of your emails.

📱You can find your emails from the "Quick links" of the My Kent website (our site for current students). You can also easily check your university email account on the My Kent Student App

📢 Beware of fraudulent emails, these may appear to be from University of Kent departments, Kent staff or organisations connected to universities such as Student Finance. Learn how to spot fake emails
