Yes. Many Kent students choose to live at home while they study, whether that's to stay close to family and friends, reduce living costs or because they're already settled locally. 

We support commuting students with travel discounts, a dedicated commuter network and timetables designed to help you make the most of your time on campus. 

For many students, commuting can be a more affordable option than moving into university accommodation. Staying at home may help you save on accommodation and household costs, while student travel discounts, railcards and Kent's free campus shuttle bus can help reduce the cost of getting to campus.  

Yes. Many students commute to Kent from locations across the South East, including London. Both Canterbury and Medway have excellent rail and road links, making it easy to travel to campus. We recommend checking journey times and transport options before you apply to ensure the commute works for you.

Yes. We understand that many students commute to campus and so we aim to make travelling as straightforward as possible. 

Your timetable is published before teaching begins, giving you plenty of time to plan your journey. Wherever possible, teaching is scheduled to reduce unnecessary trips to campus, with at least one weekday free from timetabled teaching for most full-time undergraduate students and fewer isolated teaching sessions throughout the week. This helps you make the most of your time on campus while fitting university around your life.  

Absolutely. Studying locally doesn't mean missing out on student life. Many of our commuting students build lasting friendships by getting involved in Welcome Week, joining societies, spending time on campus between classes and attending events. We also have a dedicated Mature, Part-time and Commuting Student Network, helping you connect with other students who commute.   

Yes! As a commuting student, you'll have access to the same clubs, societies, sports teams and campus events as every other student. Our timetables are designed to give you flexibility, making it easier to get involved alongside your studies and commute.  

Parking is available on both of our campuses, but you'll usually need a permit. Student parking permits are available to eligible students, with priority given to those living outside the campus exclusion zones or with specific circumstances, such as holding a Blue Badge. If driving isn't the best option, there are also excellent public transport links and cycling facilities.
