Challenging meritocracy and acknowledging structural barriers for Black students.

This first session will provide context for the report and its overarching themes and how structural barriers impact the student experience, staff perspectives and the way in which recruitment practices are carried out

This session aims to:

  • review the central findings and recommendations from the report
  • explore the main challenges faced when addressing racial disparities in the PhD recruitment process
  • examine how our understanding of structural barriers can reframe current perspectives on meritocracy and ‘notions of academic excellence’
  • unpack the ‘ideal candidate’ and explore alternative methods or criteria to measure desired attributes
