Sebastian May

International Relations MA

You're in the heart of Europe and studying with like-minded people with an interest in international affairs.

How has your career developed since you left BSIS?

During my studies at BSIS I started applying for internships and in my 2nd semester started working in the communications department at a European trade organisation based in Brussels. I later started working for a Brussels-based communications agency, working for corporate clients with an interest in shaping EU policy. I then transferred to the agency's London office and later worked for a number of different communications and digital agencies for international clients, making the most of my international background.

What are you doing now?

I currently run branded communications campaigns for a fantastic not-for-profit arts organisations, DACS, based in East London. Part of our work is to support visual artists through public affairs - in the UK and at EU level - but most of it focuses on giving back to the visual arts by sustaining their arts practices and livelihoods.

Do you think that your studies at BSIS helped with your career prospects?

Absolutely. Every organisation in Brussels (and most in Europe now) expect graduates to have an MA in a relevant topic, so this really helped me get the positions that I wanted. Also, my studies in policy and EU affairs greatly helped me pick up work more easily and excel quicker once on the job.

Do you think that BSIS is a good place to study international studies and if so why?

You're in the heart of Europe and studying with like-minded people with an interest in international affairs; it's inspirational and encouraging and I think you'll learn things here that you won't necessarily learn anywhere else in the world. The professors are equally passionate about what they do and experts in the field and have greatly encouraged me to keep going as well.
