A Bayesian account of establishing
Philosophy Work in Progress Lecture
Professor Jon Williamson (Kent)

Abstract: Establishing a proposition enables it to be taken as evidence for other propositions. Can the Bayesian theory of rational belief and decision provide an account of establishing? I argue that it can, but only if the Bayesian is willing to endorse objective constraints on both probabilities and utilities. In order to provide such an account, I also develop new Bayesian accounts of deference to expert beliefs and of inductive inference.
