Public Lecture: Professor Werner Eck (Cologne)
Classics and Archaeology Public Lectures Autumn 2018
Beyond the Rhine: the Lost Augustan Province of Germany.

This lecture will be a once in a lifetime chance to hear Werner Eck, distinguished senior scholar of Augustus and the Early Roman Empire, known to students from his countless books and articles. He will address archaeological and textual evidence for the failed Roman province established in 'Free Germany', beyond the Rhine, which Augustus had to evacuate after the loss of his legions. Of interest to Roman History fans and Archaeology buffs as much as academics. A key lecture for those interested to see the interaction of Iron Age Europe with Rome. All welcome.
