The Swiss-born painter, graphic artist and printmaker Paul Klee (1879–1940) has produced artworks that are associated with several modern art movements including Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. Klee, a master of drawing, also experimented with colour theory in painting. Klee's lectures "Writings on Form and Design Theory", published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's "A Treatise on Painting" for the Renaissance.
Students will explore how Klee's style changed over the years, what impact Picasso and the surrealist movement had on his work. We will investigate the influence of the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc on Klee's oeuvre and focus on their joint time when they formed the German Expressionism group known as "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider).
In addition, the course explores Klee's creative time at the Bauhaus School of Art, Design and Architecture as well as the effects of "the degenerate art exhibition" by Germans National Socialist Party.
This course is suitable for beginners, intermediates or advanced students and will allow you to spend time exploring the subject for interest, among like-minded people, without formal assessment.
There will be discussion activities during the course.

- To provide students with an art historical overview of Klee's oeuvre and its embedment in the wider art world.
About the tutor
Katia Mai holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Sussex and an MA in Art History, Classical Archaeology and Pre- and Early European History from the Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Germany.
Her PhD explored the traceable influence of paintings and sculptures on contemporary photography and its embedment in the wider art world. Her current academic research interests focuses on the history, theory of photography and the influence of photographic aesthetics in the fine arts from Realism until Postmodernity.For any queries, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
