'Why is reading always a problem?' - a lecture by Frank Furedi, Emeritus Professor of Sociology
Our Templeman Library Celebration

Since its invention in Ancient Greece, reading has always been associated with a problem. Throughout the centuries, reading was often perceived as a threat and the power of reading was frequently portrayed as a threat to the reader and society.

Today we still often worry about the effects of reading but we also worry about the decline of reading - especially among the young. This lecture explores the changing perceptions of the role and meaning of reading and concludes with the question 'what is our problem with reading' in the 21st century.
