Alan Hollinghurst
Creative Writing Reading Series

We're thrilled to welcome Alan Hollinghurst to the Reading Series on Tuesday. Winner of too many prizes to list here, Hollinghurst would be in most people's list of the best novelists working today in the English language.

Here are some extracts from reviews of his new novel The Sparsholt Affair:

"Split into five sections, each of which introduces us to a different time, place, and perspective, the novel charts the course of three generations of Sparsholts… In less talented hands, it's a structure that could prove problematic, one or two periods more fully realised or captivating than the others, but Hollinghurst moves between them with the ease of a true master, any regret I felt at leaving each behind immediately mitigated by the majestic welcome of the next. Without doubt, both a highlight of Hollinghurst's career, and one of the best books of the year." The Independent

"An amazing amount of the passion and folly of the human comedy is woven in… all of it beautifully observed and memorably articulated." The Guardian

"The greatest prose stylist writing in English today, this is a book full of glorious sentences, perhaps his most beautiful novel yet." The Observer
