Distinguished Visitor Lecture: The Silent Deep
Distinguished Visitor Lectures
A lecture by Lord Peter Hennessy and Dr James Jinks

The University of Kent, in partnership with The Historic Dockyard Chatham, are pleased to welcome Lord Hennessy and Dr Jinks to give a lecture on their recently published book 'The Silent Deep'. This lecture will encompass their unique insight into the role of the Royal Navy Submarine Service since 1945 – a story of great relevance to Chatham Dockyard's own post-war story as a submarine construction, refit and nuclear refuelling yard.

'The Ministry of Defence does not comment upon submarine operations' is the standard response of officialdom to enquiries about the most secretive and mysterious of Britain's armed forces, the Royal Navy Submarine Service. Written with unprecedented co-operation from the Service itself and privileged access to documents and personnel, 'The Silent Deep' is the first authoritative history of the Submarine Service from the end of the Second World War to the present day. It gives the most complete account yet published of the development of Britain's submarine fleet, its capabilities, its weapons, its infrastructure, its operations and above all - from the testimony of many submariners and the first-hand witness of the authors - what life is like on board for the denizens of the silent deep.

Concluding the lecture, a Q&A session with Lord Hennessy and Dr Jinks will be held. If you would like to submit a question for the session, please email or ask on Twitter using #UniKentEvents

Following the lecture, Lord Hennessy and Dr Jinks will also be hosting a book signing, with copies of 'The Silent Deep' available to purchase on the night.
