On the Epistemic Value of Perceptual Access in Art
My research is an investigation into the different phenomenal experiences and epistemic values that are sustained when we view handmade works of art and photographic images. Specifically, I am seeking to re-assess Walton's controversial claim that photographs are unique among image generating processes by giving us perceptual access to the subjects of the resultant images. Where clear cut boundaries between handmade and mechanically made pictures and artworks used to exist, these borders have become blurred as the world and our relationship to it has become more complicated with the advent of digital technology. In light of this I am also examining how the differences between the kinds of images affect contemporary artistic practice and how artists are recording the world and their relationship to it through the hybridization of these mediums.
