Electrical Applicances

We include a number of appliances in our accommodation on the Canterbury campus. You can find Housekeeping's instructions for using these items and the user manuals (which go into more detail) for each item to help you troubleshoot any issues you have.

If your appliance is faulty, then please report this using Home at Halls as soon as possible so a member of the Maintenance Team can come to either repair or replace the item. Do not throw away/replace a broken item before Maintenance has checked it.

Cooking appliances should not be used/stored in your bedroom for fire safety, a list of prohibited items and additional cooking and electrical safety advice can be found in the Accommodation Handbook. If prohibited items are found in your accommodation during inspections, Housekeeping will confiscate these and follow the procedures as outlined in the Handbook.

Electrical items

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that all portable electrical appliances—any device that plugs into the electricity supply—must be maintained in safe working condition to prevent electrical hazards.

To ensure safety:

  • Daily visual checks: Users must regularly inspect electrical equipment for visible signs of damage, such as frayed wires, broken plugs, or exposed wiring
  • Planned maintenance: The Estates Department will conduct annual Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) each year, and thoroughly check and maintain all electrical equipment provided in your accommodation.

Additionally, you are not permitted to install extra furniture or electrical appliances in your accommodation. This includes items like additional heaters or large white goods (e.g. fridges or washing machines). However, if new, small countertop kitchen appliances are allowed in self-catered accommodations. Microwave

Location

Microwaves are included in the kitchen/kitchenette for all our accommodation on campus.

Guidance

  •  Always check cooking instructions before cooking
  •  Loosely cover food to avoid spills and splashes
  • When the timer has finished, check that the food is piping hot and carefully remove it from the microwave
  • Check the packaging, but generally, leave your food to stand for a minute or two before eating
  • Never put any metal or foil in the microwave – it will break!

Kettle

Location

Kettles are included in the kitchen/kitchenette for all our accommodation on campus.

Guidance

  • Pull up the lid and fill the kettle using cold water from the tap. There is usually a minimum and maximum water level as a guide
  • Never overfill the water over the max line – this could lead to boiling water spilling from the kettle and causing injury
  • Once the kettle is back on the base press on the switch
  • Once the kettle has boiled the water is ready to use
  • Take care when lifting the kettle to pour as the body will be hot
  • Make sure the base of the kettle is dry before turning on. If the base is wet it could cause an electric shock.

Oven, grill and hob

Location

All self-catering kitchens include an oven/grill and hob. 

  • Electric ovens: Darwin College and Houses, Keynes Flats and Houses, Turing College, Tyler Court A and Denstead/ Ellenden/ Farthings/ Grimshill/ Kemsdale/ Lypeatt/ Nickle/ Stock in Park Wood.
  • Gas ovens: Tyler Court B&C* and Bossenden/ Clowes/ Homestall/ Purchas/ Marley/ Thornden/ Tudor/ Willows in Park Wood.  
  • Electric hobs: Darwin College and Houses, Keynes Flats and Houses, Turing College and Tyler Court A  
  • Gas hobs: Park Wood 
  • Induction hobs: Tyler Court B/C and Giles Court (meaning you will need induction or heavy-bottomed pans).

Guidance

Cookware

  • Never leave food cooking unattended
  • Flames should be under the pan and not come up the sides 
  • Keep the oven and hob clean – food particles and grease can catch fire
  • Always turn the appliance off when it is not in use
  • Never use water on a grease fire
  • If you have a gas oven and smell gas, open a window and leave the room before reporting to Security.

Hobs

  • Keep oven gloves, tea towels or other flammable items away from a hot ring
  • Flames should be under the pan and not come up the sides 
  • Ensure pot and pan handles are not hanging off the side of the bench as this makes it easier for the cookware to be knocked
  • Do not leave an empty pan on a hot burner
  • In comparison to a gas hob, electric hobs take longer to heat up and cool down and can stay hot for quite some time
  • For an induction hob, you need to use pots and pans made of magnetic materials like cast iron or stainless steel with a flat bottom to ensure proper heat transfer.

 Grills

  • Turn on the grill by pushing in and twisting the ignitor knob (gas grill), open the door and wait for it to heat up
  •  Lining the pan with silver foil will make cleaning a lot easier
  • When the grill has come to temperature, place your food on the pan and put it under the heat
  • Never close the grill door when cooking
  • When you have finished cooking, remove the grill pan and only place it back once the grill has cooled down. Otherwise, the handle may melt.

Oven

  • Position your oven racks before pre-heating to prevent scalding
  • Make sure the oven is switched on at the wall 
  • Turn on the oven by pushing in and twisting the ignitor knob, and then turn the temperature dial to the heat that you need
  • The oven may take a little while to heat up to temperature. There may be a coloured light that will change once it reaches the correct temperature
  • Follow the instructions on your food packaging and place the food in the oven, making sure the door is shut
  • Use oven gloves to remove food once it is cooked.

Iron

Location

Irons are included in the kitchen/kitchenette for all our accommodation on campus.

Guidance

  • Set up your ironing board
  • Fill up the water reservoir of the iron. Make sure it’s filled no further than the ‘max’ line
  • Turn the heat dial to the setting that is most appropriate for your fabric and wait a few minutes for the iron to heat up
  • Make sure to turn off and unplug the iron after use and empty the water reservoir
  • Leave it the iron somewhere stood up until it’s completely cooled.

Fridge and freezer

Location

Fridge freezers are included in the kitchen/kitchenette for all our self-catered accommodation on campus. Part-catered accommodation on campus includes a fridge, located in the kitchen/kitchenette.

Please note that mini-fridges are not allowed in your room unless needed for a medical condition and you have notified the Safety and Food Compliance Officer in advance. 

Guidance

  • Regularly clean the fridge shelves by using warm water and washing up liquid
  • Keep meat on the bottom shelf
  • Regularly check for out-of-date food. This can cause unpleasant smells and cross-contamination.

Vacuum cleaner

Location

Vacuum cleaners are included in the kitchen/kitchenette for all our accommodation on campus.

Guidance

  • Make sure you unravel the power cable before using the vacuum cleaner
  • Use a plug socket that is near to the area that you want to clean, making sure no one will trip over the power cable
  • Turn the plug socket on first, then turn the switch on the vacuum cleaner
  • When you are finished, turn the vacuum cleaner off first, then switch off the plug socket
  • Wind the power cable back up and store the vacuum cleaner safely
  • Do not use the vacuum cleaner to clean up any liquid spills – it will break!

Radiators

Radiators are included in all our accommodation on campus. 

Lots of the radiators at the University are part of a remote computer network, but sometimes switches still need to be switched and handles still need to be turned for everything to work correctly.  

The best way to check if you have a problem is to take a look at the self-help flowchart (PDF 89KB) which will tell you if you need to report a fault with your radiator.

Desk lamp

All rooms either include an external desk lamp of lights inbuilt into the room's desk. Where an external lamp is provided you can read the manual below.

Guidance:

  • Don't cover the head of your lamp with any items (e.g. cloth) as this could be a fire hazard when the lamp becomes hot
  • If you need more light don't use adhesive LED strip lights as these can damage the paint on the walls when you need to remove them before you leave which can result in charges.
