A traditional college hall in central campus, Rutherford College is ideal if you would like some meals included in the price of your accommodation. With the Flex Meal Plan, the cost of your accommodation includes a food allowance of £14 per day (2024/25) that can be used across our Canterbury campus.

In Rutherford College, you typically share a corridor with six other students where there are standard and large rooms available, and shared shower and toilet facilities.  Along with an included meal plan, students also have access to a kitchenette area containing a fridge, kettle and microwave. Each bedroom has its own sink.  

Accommodation costs include gas, electricity and water charges, premium sports membership, as well as internet access and personal contents insurance.  

Meals included

The Flex Meal plan is included with your accommodation giving you £14 per day (2024/25), seven days a week, to spend on food in a variety of campus catering outlets during term time, giving you the freedom to try the wide range of menus available.

Accommodation agreement

Our accommodation agreement in Eliot and Rutherford Colleges runs for 37 weeks, from September to June, and includes part of the winter vacation and all of the spring vacation. You must vacate your room for about two weeks during the winter closure period, but you can leave your belongings in your room.

Living in Rutherford College

If you're moving into Rutherford College, there are a few things you should know before you arrive. It's your home for the best part of a year, so do everything you can to make the most of your time here.

Bedding sizes and information

Beds in Rutherford College are all 3’ x 6’3" so you will need standard single bedding. You can bring your own bedding, or purchase a bedding pack plus other essentials at our partner site UniKitOut once you have been allocated to your room.

Housekeeping and laundry facilities

Rutherford College has its own launderette with laundry facilities run by Circuit Laundry. One washing machine cycle costs £2.70 and one tumble dryer cycle costs £1.30. This can be paid via the Circuit Laundry App or a top-up card. Should you need to, you can also access laundry facilities nearby in Tyler Court or Eliot College.

Our housekeeping team are on hand to provide a top-up cleaning service but you are responsible for keeping your accommodation clean. Alternatively, you can use our bookable cleaning service if you feel things are getting a bit out of hand. Support services

Each accommodation area is part of a College with Rutherford being part of Rutherford College

Colleges are looked after by the Student Wellbeing and Community Life Team who can offer you advice, help and support on a variety of topics on University life. They work closely with the ResLife Team, which contains dedicated ResLife Ambassadors (RLAs) who are typically returning undergraduate or postgraduate students. The ResLife Team are here to help you enjoy your time on campus and are regularly throwing events throughout the year for you and fellow residents to get involved with.     

The University also has an award-winning Student Support and Wellbeing Team that offers a range of services including emergency support, community events, counselling, support groups, accessibility and learning support and much more. 

For day-to-day enquiries, such as mail and parcels, visit reception. Rutherford College residents are served by Tyler Court Reception.  Our reception teams offer a wealth of knowledge about student accommodation and the University campus.
