Welcome to the School of Computing!
I'm pleased to welcome you to the School of Computing at the University of Kent – your academic home for the next few years. Our school has developed a reputation for being a welcoming environment where students from all backgrounds can flourish, so I'm delighted that you've chosen to join our friendly and inclusive community.
As Head of School, my role encompasses the overall management and strategic direction of our academic community. I work to ensure that our school continues to perform well in teaching, research, and all our academic activities. But my involvement goes beyond administration – I remain actively engaged in teaching, delivering our Foundations of Computing module to first-year students and the Computing in the Classroom module to our final-year undergraduates. This hands-on approach keeps me connected to what matters most: your learning experience.
I look forward to meeting you in person and seeing you develop during your time with us. Welcome to the University of Kent – your future in computing begins here.

Summer: Read Watch Do 🌞
If you haven’t programmed before, learn a bit of programming. We do not assume any previous knowledge of programming, but it may give you a head-start.
Most important: don't just read or listen lots about programming... actually do it!

How do I view my Welcome Week timetable?
At the top of this page, select your course. There are two timetable links to choose from: one shows all Welcome events, including your compulsory School events, and the other shows only your compulsory School events.
You can also change this view directly on the calendar by selecting or deselecting the Compulsory category.
Which Welcome Week events do I need to attend?
You should attend your compulsory School events, as these will help you prepare for the start of your studies. We also recommend attending any general Welcome events that interest you, as they're a great opportunity to meet other students and settle into life at Kent.
In particular, the Students' Union Welcome Fairs are a great way to learn about societies, groups and sports teams.
Joint honours students
If you are joining us on a Joint Honours course, we recommend prioritising Welcome activities for the first subject listed in your degree title. If your timetable has gaps, you can then explore and attend Welcome events for your second subject. This will help you make the most of your Welcome Week while getting to know both of your subject areas.
How do I view my teaching timetable?
Your teaching timetable starts from Week 1 (5 October) onwards and is available on KentVision, the My Kent website and via the My Kent Student App.
