Empower: Flo’s journey from Administration to Advocacy

Before graduating from Kent in 2020 with a BA in Criminology, Flo worked in the Careers and Employability Service carrying out administration duties, through Empower (formerly the Work-Study Scheme).

Supporting student mental health and wellbeing

A number of dedicated volunteers have become East Kent Mind Ambassadors to help support student wellbeing, including co-chairs of the new East Kent Mind Society.

We are committed to offering support to students who may be financially pressured because of their circumstances. Here are some of the financial support packages we provide:

Care Leavers

Someone who's in the care of the Local Authority for 13 weeks or more spanning their 16th birthday.

Young Independents

Young Independents are students who are under 20 years old and are in receipt of Universal Credit.

Estranged Students

Someone studying without the support of their parents due to a breakdown in the relationship.

Homeless/foyer Students

 For students without permanent residence or live in a Foyer, or before attending university.

Someone who has caring responsibilities for a family member, friend or other individual.

Student Success

Our Student Success Team ensures students get the most from their degree by working to reduce attainment gaps for underrepresented students by running programmes, workshops, and events.

Empower Scheme

Support students from underrepresented backgrounds in developing confidence, identifying their skills and understanding recruitment processes.   

First in Family

This programme supports students who are the first in their family to access higher education. It allows staff to signpost and understand first-gen students.

Kent Ambition Scholars

A brand new initiative at Kent, this is a bespoke skills programme for anyone studying at Kent who is on means-tested support and has been co-developed by current students.  

The Black student guide

We’ve collaborated with some of our current Black students and staff to create this recommendation booklet of local services that may make your experience at Kent more enjoyable.

Support & Wellbeing

We have staff to support students and discuss academic adjustments. We can help with mental health, disability, autism and specific learning differences and accessibility.
