Director of Music Susan Wanless

Director of University Music: Susan Wanless

Susan Wanless is Director of Music at the University of Kent. She read Music at Leeds University, followed by a further three years’ study there, researching into the operas of Verdi and conducting the University Chorus and Orchestra. She then combined teaching at the University and Leeds Grammar School with an active conducting career, working with many of the choirs and orchestras in Yorkshire. Since her appointment at Kent many years ago, Susan has been involved in a wide range of musical activities. Recent works she has conducted include Respighi’s Airs and Ancient Dances, Beethoven’s Symphony No 1, Poulenc’s Gloria and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, and last November she directed the University Camerata in a concert at the Église Notre-Dame in Calais.

Susan was also Master of Eliot College and is a recipient of The Barbara Morris Prize for Learning Support in recognition of her contribution to music provision across the University. Thanks to the generous donation from the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust, she and the Music team now enjoy rehearsing, performing and promoting concerts in the University’s wonderful concert hall.
