School of Biosciences

Research in the School of Biosciences

Research in the School of Biosciences revolves around understanding and exploiting the impact of Systems and Processes in the Living Cell. It has a strong molecular focus with leading-edge activities that are synergistic with one another and complementary to the teaching provision. Our expertise is in three overlapping disciplines and research themes of Protein Science, Molecular Microbiology and Biomolecular Medicine. This allows us to harness technology and develop ground-breaking ideas in the fields such as biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and biophysics. Fields of enquiry encompass a range of molecular processes from cell division, transcription and translation through to molecular motors, molecular diagnostics and the production of biotherapeutics and bioenergy. The following schematic indicates the relationship between each of the research themes including the eight research groups and two centres that form the basis:

As indicated above, the research groups contained within the School are:

The School also takes a leading role in two interdisciplinary centres:

The School also has a record of successful interactions with industry on many levels and has a substantial portfolio of enterprise activity and expertise.

The School has 26 academic staff, 56 research staff (facility managers, research fellows, postdoctoral researchers and technicians), 85 postgraduate students and 20 key support staff. The research we undertake is supported by four major research facilities that contain a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment for modern research in the molecular and cellular biosciences.

The School also accommodates independent research fellows funded by the MRC, EMBO, Wellcome Trust and the BBSRC and provides an outstanding environment for young scientists from across the globe to develop their careers as internationally competitive bioscientists.
