Learning, Teaching and Research
Our work to embed sustainability across the formal and informal curriculum and to ensure our research is conducted in an environmentally sustainable way and contributes to global sustainability challenges.
We run regular training sessions where students can gain carbon literacy certification. These courses are run and promoted through the careers and employability service.
An online short course to help you understand more about sustainability (+20 employability points).
The Sustainability team are happy to discuss ideas from students who would like to work on any aspect of sustainability as part of a dissertation or other research project.
We offer a Sustainability Year in Professional Practice placement where you can spend 24 weeks working with the sustainability team on a range of projects across campus.
The SCR was established in 2024 as one of the sub-groups of the Sustainability Steering Group (SSG) to facilitate institution change in embedding sustainability throughout all parts of the student learning experience.
We are working to ensure that every student – from architecture to business, and chemistry to digital arts – is prepared with the knowledge and understanding of sustainability, and possesses the sustainability skills and attributes, and the desire and willingness to deal with these issues.

We worked with Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS) to map our curriculum against the SDGs during the summer of 2022 and the full report in available below. Our new strategy seeks to build upon this work to find new opportunities to embed ESD using the framework outlined on the right.
We will identify opportunities to further embed ESD into the curriculum and co-curriculum by mapping existing provision across schools and ensuring that sustainability is a core thematic priority for education and research.
We are developing a sustainability leadership award which will allow students to articulate their sustainability knowledge and skills and enhance the visibility of sustainability within the curriculum to existing and prospective students.
We will deliver on the requirements of the concordat for sustainability in research and innovation practice, map sustainability across our research and support research being conducted in a sustainable way.
We are signatories to the concordat in recognition of our ambition to continue delivering cutting-edge research, but in a more environmentally responsible and sustainable way.
Sustainability is one of our five principal areas of research strength, drawing on our expertise across agriculture, food systems, green energy and circular systems.
We are participating in LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) which is a programme comprising a framework and resources to improve the sustainability and efficiency of labs.
DICE has been awarded £8.3 million funding from Research England for a five-year project “Sharing Space for Nature: enhancing the role of conservation areas in tackling current environmental crises“.
