Joel Montgomery
Dr Joel Montgomery holds a BA in Politics, an MSc in Human Resource Management, and a PhD in Management, all awarded by the University of Kent. His academic leadership roles include Director of Studies for the Year in Management and Student Experience Lead for Kent Business School . Dr Montgomery was awarded a BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant to investigate the role of local councils in supporting refugee employability. His research bridges human resource management, organisational politics, and pedagogy, drawing on extensive engagement with local government, charities, and public sector organisations in the Southeast. His PhD research involved interviewing 60 local council stakeholders to explore their political motivations, enriching his insights into organisational behaviour and informing his current work aimed at enhancing employment outcomes and personal development for refugees.
Joel’s research interests centre on refugee employability, organisational politics, human resource management (HRM), and pedagogy. His research using HRM insights includes exploring excessive technology use and workplace procrastination (Information Technology & People). His pedagogical research, featured in Higher Education, Skills and Work-Based Learning and the Journal of Work-Applied Management, addresses curricular innovation and the articulation of employability skills. Additionally, building upon his doctoral research, his work examines political environments, including political management practices within local government (Political Marketing and Management in the 2024 UK Election, Palgrave).
Dr Joel Montgomery is an experienced lecturer and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, recognised with a Bronze Award for outstanding commitment to enhancing the student experience. He teaches extensively at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, focusing primarily on organisational behaviour, human resource management, workplace psychology, and strategic management.
At the postgraduate level, his teaching focuses on the development of HRM skills and the psychological aspects of selection and assessment. At the undergraduate level, Joel delivers teaching on workplace psychology, corporate and strategic management, and business skills.
