On Wednesday 13 July, the Class of 2022 graduated in Canterbury Cathedral and celebrated with a reception in Westgate Hall. We were able to catch up with them informally and raise a toast to their achievements.

Over the past few years, such events have been challenging for all of us, and we want to thank all our staff and students who have adjusted to these challenges.

In his speech, Professor Alastair Bailey highlighted how it is a great time to be an Economist at Kent but also a great time to be leaving Kent with an Economics degree. We also celebrated the academic prizes awarded as follows

  • Jodie Brierley and Muhammad Mian were awarded the Nick May Prize for the Stage 3 Best Performer
  • As the standard was so high for this year of UG finalists the Dissertation Prize was shared between Victoria Evans, Oliver Micallef, Mihai Leolea, William Morgan and Lucy Watson
  • The Thirlwall Prize went to Olivia Wright
  • The UG Outstanding Performance Prize for Stage 3 contribution was warded to Chris Blakeley
  • The Daniel Trotter Prize was awarded to Daniel Tetteh

A ‘Student Community and Experience’ prize was introduced this year and was awarded to the student who at some point in their degree, or throughout their time on their degree, has made a significant contribution to the student community or student experience. This year it went to Aliye Osman.

“Aliye is the president of the Economics Society and has done a tremendous amount of work to create student experience work in a difficult time. In particular, Aliye co-organised several student events that were very popular among students as they provided a warm and creative environment for (social) interactions. These events were instrumental in helping bring students back to the Kennedy Building.”

Head of School Professor Miguel León-Ledesma also added “It is now the time to contribute to society as Kent Economics Graduates of 2022. You all have outstanding training and are well prepared for the job market. But never forget to stick together as a group of talented friends. The School of Economics remains your home!”
