Passports, visas and eligibility to work

If you are joining us as a new (or returning) member of staff, you will need to undergo a right to work check for us to confirm your eligibility to work in the UK.

Before commencing employment with the University you will be asked to produce documentation which evidences your right to work in the UK.

You must complete your right to work before you can undergo any work. If you do not produce the correct documentation before or on the day of your anticipated start date, employment will not be confirmed and your start day will be delayed.

If you have been previously employed by Kent but have since left employment, you will still need to undergo a new right to work check.

What documents do I need for my right to work?

If you’re a British or Irish citizen, you can prove your right to work in the UK with either a British or Irish passport or passport card. Your passport or passport card can be current or expired.

If you do not have a passport or passport card, you can prove your right to work with one of the following:

  • a UK birth or adoption certificate
  • an Irish birth or adoption certificate
  • a certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British citizen

You must also give your employer an official letter or document from a previous employer or a government agency.

The physical document needs to be checked in person for the right to work check, a scan of the document cannot be accepted as proof of your right to work.

If you are not a British or Irish citizen, you may need a visa to be eligible to work in the UK, for a short or long-term basis.

Visas have different working conditions and may restrict the holder to defined hours, post and employer. It is important that you understand your visa and ensure you do not breach your visa conditions.

You will be notified by the resourcing HR team when you need to apply for a visa and how to complete your right to work check once your visa has been granted.

You can find out more information in the link below on whether you need a visa to work in the UK.

Indefinite leave to remain, or 'settlement'  gives you the right to live, work and study in the UK for as long as you like, and apply for benefits if you’re eligible.

There are different ways to apply for British citizenship (or ‘naturalisation’) based on your circumstances.

If you have British citizenship, you are no longer considered as a foreign national and can work in the UK without immigrational controls.
