Long-term accommodation

Relocating to the UK and general guidance

If you are looking to relocate and/or it is your first time in the UK, you may wish to consider some of the guidance below before you begin your search for long-term accommodation.

If you wish to rent a property in the local area, you can do this either by renting directly from a landlord or through a letting agent. You should check that the landlord belongs to an accreditation scheme and that the letting agent is accredited through a professional body.

Once you have decided on a property, you will enter into a tenancy agreement with the landlord, often you will be asked for a tenancy/security deposit - this should not be any more than 5 weeks rent. You should also check with your landlord whether this deposit is protected.

Before you enter a tenancy agreement, you will have to prove your right to rent.

If you are thinking of buying a property in the area, (either as a first time buyer or your first property in the UK), this on average can take around 3-4 months to complete. It is recommended to seek independent legal and financial advice before you purchase a property.

As part of buying a property, you will need to apply for a mortgage. If your credit score is a high number, you are more likely to be offered a range of good mortgage deals. You can check your credit score and read how to improve this through the Money Advice Service.

There are significant costs outside the property itself, which you will need to budget for when purchasing a property. More information and useful guidance on the buying process can be found on the Government website here: 'How to buy a home'.

If you are relocating from outside the UK, you may need to pay tax and custom duty on moving personal belongings into the UK. For detailed information on this see here. Some items may be exempt from charges and you can claim Transfer of Residency (TOR) relief on these items.

If eligible, new Kent staff can be reimbursed for certain costs through the Relocation Expenses Policy. The criteria and conditions can be found on our policy page here.

You will need to submit a Statement of Intention to Relocate (found within the Relocation Expenses Policy) within six months of your new appointment in order to claim for expenses.

You may potentially be eligible for free childcare if you are working. This is dependent on:

  • your child's ages and circumstances
  • whether you're working
  • your income
  • your immigration status.

Even if you are not eligible for free childcare, all 3-4 year olds in England can receive 570 free hours per year, usually taken as 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year.

To see how to find childcare and whether you are eligible for help paying towards it, see the step by step guide here: Get Childcare.

The University of Kent also has a nursery on campus (OAKS Nursery) open to children from 0-5 years. Kent staff can apply through the Workplace Nursery Exchange Scheme, which will take monthly salary deductions  towards nursery childcare.

If you are moving with family to the UK, all children between the ages of 5-16 must legally attend primary and secondary school in the UK. All children between these ages are entitled to a free place at a state school, though other types of school are available.

More information can be found here:

Schools and Education

Apply for a Primary School (ages 5 - 11)

Apply for a Secondary School (ages 11-16)

The NHS is a health care service funded by the government. If you are applying to come to the UK on a temporary stay of more than 6 months, you may be required to pay an immigration health surcharge.  More information can be found on the NHS website here: 'Visiting or moving to England'.

When you have a medical or healthcare issue, you will need to contact your general practitioner (GPs) and make an appointment. Find out here how to register with a GP

If you require emergency treatment:

  • Dial 999 from any telephone, for urgent and potentially life-threatening emergencies which require immediate attention.
  • Diall 111 (or 111 online) for urgent but non-threatening medical concerns where you are unsure what to do/require further advice.
  • Accident and emergency (A&E) departments are options for serious injuries and emergencies. You can turn up without making an appointment, will be assessed and treated accordingly. Wait times vary depending on the severity of the illness/emergency.
