Japanese Workshop Programme

In the Summer term, Japanese workshop will be held in CNW seminar room 2 each Wednesday at 1-2pm (one session) for all levels of learners.

Week 38: 22nd April 2026 Japanese Children’s Games 

Why don’t you have fun and do a bit of physical exercises by playing games for Japanese kids, including Japanese version of Rock, Paper, Scissors, and Red light, Green light (or Grandma’s footsteps)? 

Level: This session is for everyone who wish to experience Japanese culture. The language part in the session is suitable from A0 (complete beginners). 

Week 39: 29th April 2026 Japanese Drum 

Japanese drum is called Taiko, or Wadaiko more precisely. There are particular rhythms for Wadaiko performance. Shall we learn the rhythms and try? Please bring two pens or pencils as your drumsticks. 

Level: This session is for everyone who wish to experience Japanese culture. The language part in the session is suitable from A0 (complete beginners). 

Week 40: 6th May 2026 Origami for Children’s (Boy’s) Day 

The 5th of May is Children’s (and Boy’s) Day (こどもの日; Kodomo no hi), the seasonal festival to pray for their health and happiness. Around this time, you can see Koi-carp streamers everywhere in Japan. Let’s celebrate the day by folding Origami and making the display! 

Level: This session is for everyone who wish to experience Japanese culture. The language part in the session is suitable from A0 (complete beginners). 

Week 41: 13th May 2026 Kimono 

Would you like to wear an authentic Japanese Kimono? Let’s try a simple type of Kimono called Yukata (on top of your T-shirt!) with traditional shoes Geta and see how you feel. You will be given a quick lecture of Japanese traditional clothing with some relevant vocabulary and phrases in Japanese.

Week 42: 20th May 2026 Calligraphy 

Let’s try Japanese style of calligraphy, with a brush and black ink. If you don’t know any Japanese letters or characters, we’ll teach you. If you know any Kanji characters, why don’t you practice them? Please wear appropriate clothes, definitely not a white dress! 

Level: A0-C2. Everyone is welcome. 

Week 43: 27th May 2026 Japanese Tea 

Green tea and Matcha are well-known as Japanese tea. But, do you know these are the tea Japanese people do NOT drink every day?! Did you know you should never ever add milk to Japanese tea?! Let’s find out the deep world and culture of Tea in Japan. 

Level: This session is for everyone who wish to experience Japanese culture. The language part in the session is suitable from A0 (complete beginners). 

Week 44: 3rd June 2026 Bon-odori Dance! 

If you’re getting tired by sitting at the front of PC and studying, come and join a Japanese traditional dance called Bon-odori! You will be instructed how to dance with some useful vocabulary and phrases for talking about the topic.
