Anirban Mitra obtained a BA in Economics from the University of Delhi, an MA in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a PhD in Economics from New York University in May 2012. He joined the University of Kent in October 2016. Prior to joining Kent, he was employed at the University of Oslo.
Anirban has been a member of the CESifo Research Network (Munich) since 2014. He is a member of the Microeconomics Research Group and the Development Economics Research Centre at Kent (DeReCK).
Anirban's research interests lie in the areas of Development Economics and Political Economy – often in their overlap. He has been interested in the role of economic factors behind ethnic and civil conflicts particularly in the context of Hindu-Muslim violence in India and the Maoist conflict in Nepal. His other works relate to institutional design and its ramifications on elements of public expenditure and income distribution.
