Research interests

James Barton is a PhD student researching the role of natural processes and landscape-scale solutions in achieving England’s nature recovery goals. His work spans local, regional, and national scales, from understanding land managers' perceptions of wild-living beavers in East Kent to developing a strategic plan for re-establishing natural processes across southeast England. At the national level, James is identifying spatial priorities for nature investment, focusing on areas with the greatest potential for large-scale protection and restoration, while exploring financial mechanisms to support these efforts. His research informs policy and practice, supporting large-scale, strategic approaches to nature recovery.
