About

Hazel Harris studied a BSc in Chemistry at the University of Kent (2001-2004), then stayed at Kent to study a PhD in polymer chemistry (2004-2008) with Dr Simon Holder. In 2013-2014 she obtained a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education from Canterbury Christ Church University/MidKent College where she taught chemistry and maths. In December 2014 she started working for the School of Chemistry and Forensic Science as a chemistry technician and in September 2019 she became the Lead Technician for Chemistry. She is also the Lead Technician for the Apprentice Summer School.
As the Lead Technician for Chemistry, Hazel is responsible for the overall running of Teaching Lab 1. She organises the lab layouts for modules and student rotas for experiments and manages the budget for the lab. She ensures the labs run smoothly with the help of her team of chemistry technicians. She sometimes demonstrates experiments in the lab, given her synthetic chemistry background, she tends to demonstrate synthetic rather than physical chemistry experiments; examples include recrystallisation; aspirin; colloidal silica and DLS; photochromism; and zeolite.
