Media Studies

Media Studies is a new department which will bring together students with a passion for contemporary culture and a desire to influence future developments in the arts.

This is a new interdisciplinary programme, which focusses on contemporary media and the ways in which ideas about society and culture are communicated. Stories are told through still and moving images, words (written and spoken), music, photography, animation, adverts, and environments, but in the 21st century the boundaries between these forms have blurred. On this programme, you explore these blurred lines, looking at how meaning is created, cultural expression generated, and everyday experience mediated by a rapidly evolving landscape of digital technologies. The wide range of modules we offer enables you to bring together perspectives from Sociological and Humanities disciplines, and to combine academic study of theory and history with an element of practice. Overall, you acquire knowledge and skills that will especially equip you for careers in the Creative Industries, now recognised as a key sector of the UK economy.
