UELT events for Academic Staff 2009-10
The new Autumn term programme of events for academic and research staff, sessional lecturers and graduate teaching assistants is now available on the UELT website. As well as the usual Thursday lunchtime sessions of the Academic Practice Forum , we will also be hosting a number of external speakers and several new events.
The third LearnHigher symposium on assessment practice is open to all colleagues on 30th October 2009. This event is focusing on formative assessment: details here.
The first Kent Teaching and Learning Conference is planned for Thursday 18th March 2010 – this will be a chance for colleagues to share and discuss practice across the University, to consider new approaches that are being tried in various departments (including some projects supported by the Challenge Fund) – and to find out about how the University is rewarding and recognising teaching.
A new seminar series ‘What on earth do they learn at school?’ is aimed at colleagues involved in admissions and first year teaching, and involves heads of sixth form and curriculum specialist from Kent schools explaining different areas of the curriculum studied by many of our students before they arrive here. The series opens on 12 November 2009 with Liz Habbershaw, from Marlowe Academy, offering an overview of the curriculum and of the teaching approaches used in secondary/further education. On 03 December 2009 Maria Willis and Neil Willis from Longfield Academy will explore the curriculum in science subjects, and Janet Mander of St Edmund’s School will talk about the maths curriculum in the Spring term. Further seminars on Humanities, Languages and Social Science subjects are planned for the Spring term – keep an eye on the UELT website for details.
‘Shaping Academic Work: the next ten years’ a day seminar on 27th November 2009, is sponsored by the Society for Educational Studies and involves speakers from a number of other universities. You are invited to explore the preparation of academics for their future roles, and the nature of academic life in the 21st century. Discussion will focus upon: the nature of academic work into the next decade; preparing new entrants to the profession for an academic role; and the moral, economic and social obligations upon academics. This develops the 2009 theme of the Society for Educational Studies: An Academic Life. Debate will be supported by presentations from some key thinkers in the area of academic practice.
Details of all events can be found on the UELT website .
