PGCHE

Mentors

Each student on the ATAP or PGCHE programme will be assigned a Mentor from their School by their Head of School. The Mentor's role is one of department-specific support and guidance.

The expertise and good-will of staff in academic Schools is absolutely critical to the ATAP and PGCHE students' development - both their development as a member of an academic community and as a means of getting specific feedback on their teaching from a subject specialist. In this respect, the role of the Mentor is, as it always has been, central.

Mentor Network Meetings

All Mentors are welcome to attend. Please email Alison Chapman if you wish to attend.

The next meeting will be held on in Autumn term. Fran Beaton, the Programme Director, will explain the role of the Mentor and will be available to answer questions and discuss any issues that Mentors would like to raise.

Teaching Observations

Students on the programmes are required to have teaching observation by their UELT tutor and/or Mentor. Students are required to establish contact with their Mentor in order to make arrangements at a convenient time. The requirement for teaching observation is as follows:

All students are required to have TWO teaching observations, ONE by their Mentor and ONE by their UELT tutor.

Students studying UN819 An Introduction to Learning, Teaching and the Academic Environment are novice or relatively inexperienced teachers. Early observation and feedback on their teaching helps to build confidence. Therefore, an early observation is recommended. Each student is required to submit a record of TWO teaching observation, showing how they have responded to feedback and developed their skills, as part of the module assessment. The teaching observation form should be completed by the observer and student. One observation is carried out by the UELT Tutor and one observation is carried out by the Mentor.
