MA in Modern European Literature

Entry Requirements

A first- or second-class honours degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent).

The Programme

The MA in Modern European Literature covers a range of national literatures (English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish), and gives students the opportunity to read major literary works in their language of original composition. Students select modules covering at least two different European literatures (in addition to English) from the list below (subject to availability):

  • CP805 European Modernism: Sexual and Textual Deviance
  • CP808 Writing the Self: Autobiography in the Modern Period
  • EN878 Blindness, Vision and Aesthetic Writing in the Nineteenth Century
  • EN889 Literary Theory
  • EN890 Contemporary Women Poets
  • FR855 Women Writers and the Family in Twentieth-Century Literature
  • FR857 European Tales of the Fantastic
  • FR866 Literature and Theory
  • FR869 Varieties of Artifice: The Painting in the Text
  • FR870 Through a Lens: Photography in the Text
  • GE804 German Modernism 1890-1930
  • GE805 Post-War Literature and Memory
  • LS803 From Pure to Committed Literature
  • LS804 National and Regional Consciousness in Modern Spanish Literature

Once students have passed the coursework modules, they proceed to write a Dissertation of 12,000 words over the summer vacation on a relevant topic of their choice.

Language Requirement

Students enrolled on this MA will be expected to be able to read literary works in any TWO of the following European languages (in addition to English): French, German, Italian, Spanish.
