ESRC DTC Logo

Overview

The University of Kent is proud to be part of the South-East ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in partnership with the Universities of Reading, Royal Holloway and Surrey. This centre of excellence in social science postgraduate research training has 24 fully funded ESRC PhD studentships across the consortium for students commencing their studies in the 2012-13 academic year.  PhD studentships will be awarded on the basis of the academic excellence of both the candidate and the research proposal.

The academic schools listed below are eligible to put forward candidates for consideration in the South-East ESRC DTC student competition under the pathways specified.  Within the pathways, there is a selection of PhD programmes and routes which can be taken based on a candidate’s previous experience and research interests. Candidates who have not previously undertaken a Master’s degree are likely to be required to undertake a research training Master’s degree prior to embarking on their PhD research (1+3 model).

Pathways, Academic Schools and Contacts

Any candidate wishing to be considered for an ESRC studentship award should contact the academic school for further information (see contacts listed below).  Before doing so, candidates should first consider information about PhD programmes on offer within these social science areas and identify a potential supervisor.  The contacts listed below will be able to advise applicants on the PhD routes available and the ideal route for each candidate based on their previous experience.

ESRC Postgraduate Training Framework

The ESRC has changed the funding allocation for 2011 onwards which involves the establishment of a network of institutional or consortia level Doctoral Training Centres (DTCs) funded by the ESRC.  The new framework strengthens provision for postgraduate training in the UK by building upon the considerable strengths already in existence across the social science research base and encouraging institutions to collaborate to provide the highest quality training to their students.  Further information is available HERE.

South East Doctoral Training Centre Website:  http://southeastdtc.surrey.ac.uk/

The South-East ESRC DTC partners make major contributions to social science research regionally, nationally and internationally, and this collaboration places our social scientists at the centre of inter-institutional research and training activities.  This partnership will enhance the doctoral experience of our social science postgraduate researchers who will benefit from training, development and networking opportunities offered across the DTC including access to advanced training offered by the consortium partners.
