Michael Burgess is Professor of Federal Studies and Director of the Centre for Federal Studies (CFS). His intellectual interests in federalism date back to his doctoral studies in the mid-1970s at the University of Leicester. He came to the University of Kent in 2005 in order principally to establish the CFS and to develop research in federal studies. He was convenor of the Master’s (MA) Programme in ‘Comparative Federalism’ 2006-2012 and now supervises several doctoral students in federal studies. Currently he is Vice-President of the International Association of Centres for Federal Studies (IACFS) and is a member of the advisory editorial boards of Publius: The Journal of Federalism and Regional and Federal Studies. He is also a member of the Research Committee on Comparative Federalism and Federation (RC28) of the International Political Science Association (IPSA). Today his research interests and outputs place him as part of a global network of scholars who study federalism in its many forms. The CFS has evolved primarily into a research centre with a nucleus of lively postgraduate doctoral students from different parts of the world
