Who's more important, the consumer or the shopper?

Seminar open to all Kent Business School students and staff

More information...

Speaker: Vanessa Brown, Dynamic Reasoning

Vanessa Brown, Managing Director of Dynamic Reasoning has a strong background in sales and marketing having previously worked for Pepsi and Nestle, ultimately heading up their ambient food business.

Dynamic Reasoning has been successfully helping a broad range of food and drink businesses to achieve profitable sales growth since 2005. As one of Kent Business School's partners in the dunnhumby scheme for small food producers, Dynamic Reasoning is committed to helping companies use insight to add value for all stakeholders.

Seminar Synopsis

It is well understood that people have to buy before they consume. As a result FMCG companies and multiple retailers dedicate significant resources (man power as well as financial) in the pursuit of shopper marketing, encouraging more shoppers to buy more, and more often. But is this necessarily resulting in increased sales for both parties in the long term? You only have to look at the long list of categories in decline to realise it's not always that effective.

So who should these brand owners or brand facilitators be focusing their efforts on, is it the shopper or the sometimes forgotten consumer?

Research Seminar - Akbar's multiculturalism: lessons for diversity managment in the 21st century

More information...

Seminar Open to Staff and Students

Speaker

Dr Jawad Syed is a Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Kent Business School, University of Kent, UK. His main academic interests include gender and diversity in organisations, international HRM, strategic HRM and organisational knowledge.

Seminar Synopsis

This seminar is based on one of my conceptual papers on theorizing diversity management in the 21st century. In this paper, I challenge the hegemony of US-centric perspectives in the diversity management literature by explaining how non-Western histories and cultures may provide alternative contexts for understanding and managing diversity. In pursuit of this, I describe how a Muslim ruler, Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, conceptualized multiculturalism in the 16th century India, and how his principles of sulh-i-kul, rah-i-aql, and rawa-i-rozi may be adopted to develop a socio-political environment conducive to managing cultural diversity in organizations, an environment which is currently lacking even in the majority of democratic countries in the world today.

Research Seminar: Drawing General Conclusions From Samples: Towards the Improved Treatment of Generalization of Knowledge Claims in IS Research

Speaker – Professor Peter B Seddon, The University of Melbourne, Australia

More information...

Seminar Open Staff and Students only

Peter B. Seddon is an associate professor in the Department of Information Systems at The University of Melbourne, Australia. His major research interests are in the areas of IT management, IT outsourcing, packaged enterprise application software, business intelligence, and evaluating information-systems success. Dr Seddon has published over 80 papers in journals and conferences, including in journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, The European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, and Communications of the Association for Information Systems. He is currently an elected representative for the Asia-Pacific region on the AIS Council (the global association for Information Systems academics) and Program Co-Chair for PACIS 2011. During 2005-2008, Dr Seddon was a Senior Editor for MIS Quarterly.

Seminar Synopsis

This paper presents a framework for justifying generalization in Information Systems (IS) research. The paper is structured in three parts. Part 1 provides evidence that the treatment of generalization in many empirical papers in leading IS research journals is unsatisfactory. Part 2 presents the new framework. Part 3 shows how the framework may be applied by practicing researchers. In addition to helping researchers achieve improved understanding of the role of generalization in IS research, it is argued that following the pathways in the framework will lead to both improved rigor and research that is more relevant (and understandable) to practice.

Seminar Synopsis

This seminar will offer three complementary frameworks for designing sustainable supply chains in the food and drink sector. Starting with the business context of competitive forces in the industry, we will explore a performance improvement hierarchy, a risk management framework and a carbon reduction methodology. There will be opportunities for discussion of the issues and approaches in the context of established supply chain thinking.
