13/14 November 2012,
In October and November 2012 the University of Kent’s Business School delivered a series of taster workshops across Kent for over 50 ambitious owner-managers of Small to Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Through these workshops, attendees heard about the ten characteristics of successful SMEs (known as ‘The BIG Ten’) and applied these characteristics to their own businesses through action learning with other like-minded business owners:
‘I was pleased to establish that I was not the only individual that is struggling with the workload and mountain of objectives, and I came away feeling a lot more positive and that I was not alone’.
Jacquie Agnew, Owner-Manager, Frock-a-licious Ltd
The workshops also provided a unique opportunity to learn about Kent Business School’s Business Improvement and Growth (BIG) Journey, the only research-led growth programme for ambitious owner-managers in the UK. This programme has been designed to help business owner and managers realise a better future for themselves and their business.
The Kent Business School has already helped over 500 owner-managers achieve their aspirations for sustained profitable growth and these workshops were an opportunity to further share the School’s business growth knowledge and expertise. These workshops are informed by the Promoting Sustainable Performance programme; an ongoing rigorous research programme with SMEs across the region led by the Centre for Employment, Competitiveness and Growth at the Kent Business School.

23 January 2012
Two Human Resource Management textbooks have been published this month with authors from Kent Business School:
Strategic Human Resource Management by Katie Truss, David Mankin and Clare Kelliher (OUP)
Professor Katie Truss commented, “I and my co-authors David Mankin and Clare Kelliher were inspired to write this new textbook because we couldn’t find a book that we felt addressed the topic of Human Resource Management at a purely strategic level but was also accessible and readable. The book is aimed at final year undergraduate students and postgraduate students studying Strategic Human Resource Management, and explains the main theoretical frameworks, together with the key strategic Human Resource Management imperatives, illustrated by a wide range of contemporary case studies. Final year undergraduate Human Resource Management students at the Business School’s Medway campus have already had the opportunity to use some of the chapters as part of their core reading material, and have given us some very positive feedback.’
Professor Katie Truss is Head of the Kent Business School at Medway and Director of Studies, Postgraduate Certificate in Employee Engagement
