Music and Audio Arts

Facilities

The School of Arts new multi-million pound Medway development at the Chatham Historic Dockyard includes industry-standard facilities for Music and Audio Arts, Fine Art and Event and Experience Design students.

The new music facilities include a spatial audio studio, a Foley studio, an ensemble rehearsal space and a flagship recording studio. All of the new studios are designed by DACS and complement the existing Music and Audio Arts facilities on the main Medway campus.

Studio 1

Studio 1 is the first of our two tracking studios. It features a Yamaha 02R96 digital mixing console, an Apple Mac G5 computer workstation primarily running Logic Pro, an ADAT HD24 hard disk recorder, Genelec and KRK VXT bi-amplified monitors, a Yamaha P60 electronic piano and a host of peripheral equipment.

This studio has two dedicated soundproof performance booths which can be recorded from simultaneously.

Studio 2

Studio 2 is the second of our two tracking studios. This studio is built primarily around a Pro Tools HD 8 system featuring a Control 24 digital mixing console, Digidesign 192 and 96 interfaces and an Apple Mac G5 computer workstation. Stereo monitoring is provided by a choice of Mackie or Genelec active monitors, but Studio 2 also has additional Genelec monitors for true 5.1 mixing.

Studio 2 has also been designed as a tutorial studio, and the majority of practical lectures take place here. A class of twenty students can work comfortably within this space.

Like Studio 1, this studio also has two dedicated soundproof performance booths. This studio has the benefit of an IP camera system that allows a live video feed from the booths to be displayed on a large monitor in the main control room.

Studio 3

Studio 3 is a smaller studio facility designed to operate as an overdubbing suite and as a post production facility. This studio features an Apple iMac, a Focusrite Saffire audio interface, an X-Station 61 MIDI controller keyboard, KRK VXT bi-amplified monitors and JBL monitors.

Studio 3 has a dedicated recording booth containing a Kemble upright piano, two Behringer V-Amps (bass and guitar), a Behringer Eurorack UB2222FX mixing desk and a Behringer Powerplay Pro XL headphone amplifier.

Post Production

We have two designated post production studios within our department. Both are specifically designed for mixing and mastering purposes. The first of our post production studios features a Yamaha 02R96 digital mixing console, an Apple Mac G5 computer workstation primarily running Logic Pro, an M-Audio Keystation Pro Midi controller keyboard, a range of outboard effects and processing units and a quadraphonic Genelec monitoring system.

The second of our post production studios features a Digidesign 002 digital mixing console, an Apple Mac G5 computer workstation primarily running Pro Tools 8 and a Novation X-Station synthesiser.

Silent Rehearsal

We have two silent rehearsal booths featuring a Roland Juno-D keyboard, Roland V-Drums, two Behringer V-Amps (bass and guitar), a Behringer Eurorack UB2222FX mixing desk and a Behringer Powerplay Pro XL headphone amplifier.

Our silent rehearsal booths are independently bookable and prove to be a popular feature for students who wish to use these facilities to rehearse or jam with other musicians.

Computer Suite

Our computer workstation suite comprises of twenty five Apple iMac computer workstations, running music applications such as Pro Tools 8, Logic Pro, Finale score writing software and Reaktor 5, as well as a host of multimedia and bespoke applications such as Director, Puredata, Sonic Birth, Photoshop and Microsoft Office.

All of our computer workstations are networked, allowing students to access their work on any workstation in the department. Each computer workstation setup features Evolution MIDI Controller Keyboards, Digidesign M-Box hardware and Beyer-Dynamic headphones.

The computer workstation suite, like our studio facilities, can be accessed out of hours, providing a flexible working environment for our students.

Equipment

In addition to the equipment in our studio suite, our students have access to a wide range of equipment to allow them to experiment with a variety of different approaches to the same audio problem. This equipment is available for use by our students for many different assignments throughout their course. This list is not comprehensive and is subject to change.
