Open day Information: The Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering department at Oxford University Hospitals are hosting our annual Open Day for the Scientist Training Programme for Medical Physics, Clinical Engineering, and Scientific Computing.

The Open Day is a virtual event held on Microsoft Teams on December 11th, 2025, 10:00–16:30.

There are more than 50,000 Clinical Scientists working within the NHS in over 50 specialisms, and they are involved in over 80% of all diagnoses. It is a profession in which you can use your scientific skills and knowledge to improve patient outcomes, participate in research, and have a varied, interesting career.

The Scientist Training Programme is a post-graduate 3-year training programme to become a HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist, normally working within the NHS. During the training programme trainees will be employed by a scientific department in the NHS and be enrolled in a fully funded part-time master’s degree with a participating university. During the programme trainees will undertake work-based learning from their employer, and academic learning at University. Trainees are salaried at NHS Band 6 for the duration of the programme and once registered will normally progress to a band 7 position.

Our open day is tailored to the Medical Physics, Clinical Engineering, and Scientific Computing specialties in the STP. We are including: an introduction to the STP and clinical science; an introduction to specialisms in Medical Physics (Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology, and Non-ionising Imaging); advice for applications from IPEM and the NSHC; an introduction to Scientific Computing; speakers from King’s College London on the MSc in Clinical Science (Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering); and presentations from clinical engineers from different Trusts about what they do in their roles.

We will be presenting talks from:

  • Clinical scientists working in NHS Trusts,
  • Current trainees,
  • National School of Healthcare Science,
  • Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM)
  • Academics from King’s College University

There will also be a dedicated Q&A for each specialism, the university speakers, and applications advice.
