A global human rights litigation agenda: Climate, war, migration, supply chains

GLAN’s co-founders will discuss the experience of developing an agenda for international human rights legal action, which aims to address areas of structural global inequality and injustice. They will discuss GLAN’s work on global climate justice; open-source intelligence and aerial bombardment; the exploitation of conflict-affected territories by corporations; the violence against migrants in Europe and Australia and accountability and supply chains.

Speakers:Dr Gearóid O Cuinn, Director, Global Legal Action Network (GLAN)

Gearóid is director of the Global Legal Action Network where he is responsible for GLAN's legal actions and strategic growth. He is a Visiting Fellow at the Transnational Law Institute at Kings College London, an adjunct lecturer at the Irish Centre for Human Rights where is responsible for legal clinical work and lectures in transnational lawyering. Gearóid formerly lectured at Lancaster University Law School and his academic research focus on public international law, human rights and public health governance. He has worked directly with human rights groups in Palestine and Syria and provided legal support for numerous NGO's internationally. Gearóid was educated at the National University of Ireland, Galway (LLB), University of Nottingham (LLM) where he completed his doctorate and was funded by the Wellcome Trust. Gearóid has active links with the legal profession and active clinical legal education in a number of law schools internationally, especially within public international law and the use of technologies in pro bono legal work.

Dr Ioannis Kalpouzos, GLAN Co-founder, Visiting Assistant Professor, Boston University School of Law

Dr Ioannis Kalpouzos is a scholar and practitioner in public international law, international criminal law, the law of war and human rights law. He is a faculty member at City Law School, University of London; a Visiting Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Law, and, in the Spring of 2020 was a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, teaching on New Technologies and the Law of War. He has also taught at King’s College, University of London and at the University of Notre Dame. Dr Kalpouzos is co-founder of the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN). He has worked on the themes of war & occupation, environmental justice, supply chains & accountability, as well as migration & border violence. He has worked on projects on the exploitation of natural resources in Western Sahara; a collaboration with Bellingcat on air-strike analysis and evidence in Yemen; climate change and international law; and international criminal law and the treatment of asylum seekers in Australia, co-authoring a submission to the International Criminal Court. He has worked with legal clinics at Stanford Law School, Harvard Law School, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and King’s College London, among many institutions.
