Dr Michael Hughes has had a long career in English language teaching and assessment. He has taught in Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy and Sweden, where he worked with postgraduate students at the World Maritime University under the auspices of the United Nations. He has extensive experience as an examiner and assessor for the major examination boards both in the UK and internationally. He has been an external examiner for a number of prestigious universities in the UK. Within the University of Kent he has combined English language teaching, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and quality assurance and pastoral roles. He served as School and then Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching for a total of twelve years and was a College Master for six years. His research interests reflect his professional background and include the efficacy of teaching training programmes for English Language teachers and the student experience of Higher Education in the UK, particularly that of international students. He has written articles and reviews for specialist and professional publications including the 'Journal of English for Academic Purposes', 'Modern English Teacher' and 'Practical English Teaching'. He was Chair of BALEAP (2007-10) and remains actively involved in its professional development and accreditation activities. He has been teaching on the BA programme since 1999 and has designed and taught a number of modules for the Programme.  He established and has taught on the MA in Applied Linguistics for TESOL Programme in the Department.
