The University is hosting a free event at its Tonbridge Centre to celebrate 100 years of the Women’s Movement in Kent, Sussex and Surrey, on Saturday 8 December.
The event, which will run from 09.30 until 16.30, will feature talks and discussions on several areas of the Women’s Movement, including a focus on the Women’s Suffrage movement in Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells, and a look at art and literary works produced in response to the Suffrage campaign.
There will also be an open Q&A session with Dr Caitriona Beaumont from London South Bank University on ‘Housewives associations’ that formed in the early 1900s and the concept of democratic citizenship in the campaigns for women’s rights that they undertook.
Organiser Dr Anne Logan from the University of Kent’s School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research said: ‘This promises to be an insightful and thought-provoking event looking at a key moment in both British society as a whole and within the South East.’
The event is free to attend but spaces are limited so early registration is advised. Tea and coffee will be provided but guests are asked to bring their own lunch. The full address is the Tonbridge Centre, Avebury Avenue, Tonbridge, TN9 1TG.
