Dr Nikolaos Kalyvas

About

Dr Nikolaos Antonios Kalyvas is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at Kent Business School. He joined KBS in January 2023. Nikolaos is based in the Department of Accounting and Finance. His previous academic appointments were at the University of Southampton (Lecturer B in Finance), the University of Greenwich (Lecturer in Finance), and the University of Sussex (Fellow in Banking). Dr Kalyvas has served as co-director of the Centre of Empirical Research in Finance and Banking of the Southampton Business School.
Dr. Kalyvas holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Sussex, an MSc in International Banking from the University of Southampton, an MSc in International Business and Development Economics from the University of Reading, and a BA in Business from the University of Reading.
Before embarking on academia, Dr Kalyvas worked as an economist for the Financial Times and the Ministry of Economic Development of Greece.

Research interests

Dr Kalyvas has a strong research interest in the following research themes:
• Bank loan contracting, bank lending, and bank performance: Particularly, what are the factors driving bank performance and the pricing of loans? This could relate to both internal factors, such as corporate governance issues, or external issues, such as regulations.
• Real effects of the banking and finance sector. Dr Kalyvas is interested in exploring the effects of the financial sector on several economic outcomes, such as entrepreneurship, income inequality, employment, economic growth, and health outcomes.
• Political economy. Dr Kalyvas has a strong interest in exploring how politics shape financial outcomes. He is interested in the financial effects of factors such as political connections, campaign finance laws, political corruption, political risk, uncertainty, and ideology.
• Corporate innovation: A recent research interest of Dr Kalyvas are the drivers of corporate innovation globally, especially how the banking and finance industry affects corporation innovation outcomes. Innovation is one of the key engines of economic growth, and policymakers around the world are interested in research that assists them in formulating policies that could improve both the quantity and the quality of innovation.

Teaching

For the academic year 2022/2023, Dr Kalyvas is the convenor of the Corporate Governance and Ethics PG module within KBS.
In the past, Dr Kalyvas has taught and developed several modules, such as International Banking, Islamic Banking, Financial Instruments & Institutions, and Corporate Finance, in several UK universities. 

Supervision

Dr Kalyvas has successfully completed PhD supervision in the past at the University of Southampton:
Dr Christine Christofi – The effects of CEO cultural heritage on bank outcomes. Passed with minor revisions.

Professional

Dr Kalyvas holds a PGCE in Higher Education from the University of Greenwich and he is also Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
