Dr Thomas E. Bell

Dr Thomas E. Bell is an environmental social scientist whose research focuses on the moral and political dimensions of climate activism and climate movement organising in the Northeastern United States. His work examines climate movement strategies for realising climate solutions that make provisions for distributive and procedural justice, and he explores the ways in which grassroots actors enact responses to the climate crisis through activism and social movement organising.

Tom completed his PhD at the University of Kent in 2024. His thesis – ‘Taking Responsibility for the Climate Crisis in Massachusetts: Climate Activism, Justice, and Organizing to Construct a Green New Deal’ – is based upon 15 months ethnographic fieldwork.

Tom has a BA (Hons) from the University of Cambridge, as well as an MA in Social Anthropology from the University of Kent.
