Professor Osman Durrani retired as Head of German in December 2010. He studied at Oxford, where he was John Doncaster Scholar at Magdalen College (BA 1968, MA 1972, DPhil 1976). 

He lectured at University Hall, Buckland, Berkshire, the Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University), and at the University of Durham, prior to taking up the role of Chair of German at Kent in 1995. 

Osman taught courses on classical German literature as well as on contemporary authors and films, and, for comparative literature, travel writing. Past and present research interests include the Faust myth and the relationship between Thomas Mann and his son Klaus. Another area of interest is in computer applications in the humanities.
