Having an awareness and understanding of other cultures allows for effective and meaningful cross-cultural communication, which is fundamental to successful social and work relationships. This module aims to enhance your intercultural awareness by understanding dynamic values and beliefs of different cultures. Having a greater awareness of cultures can prevent the perpetuation of ethnocentrism, cultural bias and stereotypes, leading to a more inclusive world.
A wide range of intercultural competencies and skills will be analysed, along with various theoretical models to measure your intercultural competencies and identify techniques to help you further develop them. The module will focus on potential barriers that may impede intercultural communication (verbal and non-verbal) and tools and strategies to overcome these barriers. Other significant elements of cultures that will also be of focus are differences in the power balance across cultures, politeness and sociocultural norms. In order to gain a deeper understanding of a specific culture, you will be encouraged to select a culture of your choice for your final written assignment, and explore related topics to underpin your credibility as both opinion leaders and academic researchers. The interactive workshops will help you to develop your communication skills to engage effectively while in discussion and negotiation.

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to:
1) critically evaluate the differences in dynamic values and beliefs across cultures and reflect how these compare with their own cultural values and beliefs.
2) identify examples of ethnocentrism and cultural bias to ascertain where potential misunderstandings or conflicts can occur between cultural groups.
3) evaluate the appropriateness of communication tools and strategies to aid effective communication in various cross-cultural contexts.
4) apply theoretical models and readings to critically reflect and develop intercultural skills and competencies.
5) identify factors that influence culture and critically analyse how a specific culture (and language) has developed over a period of time.
