Campus Shuttle

During this time your travel may be disrupted and travel providers are putting in place measures to ensure you maintain social distancing. For up to date information see our COVID-19 travel page

Update: Due to the current Government guidance regarding face-to-face teaching and essential travel only, the University has made the decision to suspend the Campus Shuttle service until the 9th April.

If you are a student attending face-to-face teaching or practical research on campus and you require the campus shuttle service to be operational please email with a minimum of 3 working days’ notice (weekends excluded) of your attendance on campus with the following details:

  • your full name

  • your student number

  • dates in which you expect to travel between 8th March and 9th April

  • if need to be collected from Keynes bus stop, Pier Quays or Pembroke and whether it is a return journey

  • email from your academic tutor confirming dates you are required to be on campus.

Once we have received this information with confirmation from your academic tutor we will arrange with you a taxi service or inform you if a shuttle service has been provided for that day.

The University of Kent operates a free coach service between Medway and Canterbury campuses, in partnership with The Kings Ferry. This service operates 7 days a week term time only and the journey takes approximately 50 minutes.

This service is only available to University of Kent students and staff on production of a valid KentOne card (ID) or Kent Union staff card.

During this time, face coverings must be worn at all times and the service will operate at 50% capacity. As a result, booking a seat is essential and if you are not travelling before the departure time please ensure you cancel your booking. This enables us to keep track of who has travelled on the service and allows others to book a seat if they need to use the service at that time.

Your temperatue will be checked by the driver before you board the service. In the unlikely occurrence of a high temperature, please cancel your booking to travel (if possible) and contact Campus Security on 01227 823333. The shuttle service is not a wheelchair accessible service. Please contact us directly to discuss your requirements so we can arrange suitable alternative transport for you. To guarantee your time of travel please give 1 full working days’ notice.

Booking a seat

It is essential that you book your a seat prior to travelling. You can book your seat upto 30 minutes before you travel. Follow the instructions to book a seat. For travel between Pier Quays, Pembroke (Medway campus) and Dockyard (Western Avenue), you can also catch the 1 or 2 Arriva bus for this journey.

If you are either a carer who will need to travel on the Campus Shuttle service sitting next to the student you are travelling with, or if you are a student who requires a carer to sit next to you whilst travelling, please contact the Transport Team to assist with the booking.

  1. Book a seat on My Mobile Tickets from your desktop, tablet or mobile phone.
  2. Log in using your University of Kent details. The first time you register you will be asked to confirm your email and mobile number.
  3. Choose the direction and the date of travel for your journey and press 'Search Buses'.
  4. A timetable of the scheduled services will appear, click ‘select’ for the scheduled service in which you wish to book. Check your booking details are correct and press ‘Book Now’.
  5. On your checkout page, confirm that you agree with the storage and handling of your data by this website and press ‘Place order’.

To view your ticket:

  1. Go to My Mobile Tickets at the top of the page, next to the University of Kent logo, select the three horizontal lines and then select the option 'My Bookings'.
  2. A table will appear with all your bookings displayed, if you scroll across to the 6th column you will see the status of your booking.
  3. In the 7th column of the table, select ‘Get Mobile Ticket’ to access your ticket for boarding. You can either print your ticket, or show it on your smartphone when you board the shuttle. Please do not take a photo or screenshot of your ticket, as this can cause issues with the scanner and you may not be able to board.


Booking this service is essential due to COVID-19 Track and Trace, please note you may also be required to show your KentOne or Kent Union card when boarding your booked service.

Cancelling a booking

There is also the option to cancel your booking at anytime on My Mobile Tickets and if you do not cancel before travelling you may be charged an administration fee. Alternatively, you can contact and notify as to why you were unable to travel.

This is so we are aware if you have travelled on the service and allows others to book a seat if they need to use the service at that time.

To cancel your booking:

  1. Go to My Mobile Tickets at the top of the page, next to the University of Kent logo, select the three horizontal lines and then select the option 'My Bookings'.
  2. In your bookings table, swipe across to the 7th (last) column titled ‘Action’ and select ‘Cancel Booking’.

The route

The route used between the campuses will be to and from University Road - A290 - Thanet Way A299 - M2 (J4) - A278 - A2 - Ito Way - Pier Rd – Maritime Way- Western Avenue- Central Avenue.

The shuttle visits the stops in the following order: Keynes- Pier Quays- Dockyard (Western Avenue)- Pembroke- Dockyard (Western Avenue)- Pier Quays- Keynes.

Coach features

As part of the new contract The Kings Ferry are providing two new larger vehicles, one 53 seater and one 34 seater of which in order to maintain social distancing will both be running at 50% capacity. Features of the new vehicles include Wi-Fi, USB charging points, more comfortable seats, a toilet and fold out tables on the larger vehicle.

The Wi-Fi on the Campus Shuttle vehicles has been upgraded so you can stay connected on your journey. Password: Kingsferry50

To ensure you travel in confidence during this time, the campus shuttle have also introduced enhaced cleaning regimes, protective screens for the drivers, new purifying air filters and hand sanitiser dispensers.

Terms of service

The service is free and only available to all University of Kent staff and students (including Kent Union). You must make sure you have a valid KentOne Card (ID card). When using this service you will automatically agree to the Campus Shuttle terms of service.
