Welcome to the Religious Studies Department
Based in the historic religious centre of Canterbury, the Department of Religious Studies explores a wide range of forms of religion and the sacred in a spirit of open, critical enquiry. Whilst interested in religion and sacred through human history, the Department has particular expertise in religion in the contemporary world that informs all of its teaching and research.
It offers a flexible and highly-regarded undergraduate degree programme, taught MAs which provide more advanced and specialised study, and a successful programme of doctoral training and supervision.
Members of staff are internationally-recognised in their areas of research expertise, and the Department has a strong track record of securing external research funding. It is committed to taking academic work beyond the boundaries of the university and is currently working on projects with organizations including the United Nations, the British Museum and the British Council.

Covering conflict: training student journalists
The Department recently co-ordinated a national training workshop for student journalists on covering conflict in student media in conjunction with the National Union of Students.

Professor Gordon Lynch recently hosted an evening reception at Lambeth Palace with the leading provider of on-line religious educational material, Truetube.

Dr Jessica Frazier recently appeared on the popular Radio 4 programme, ‘In Our Time’, hosted by Melvyn Bragg, to discuss the history and influence of the Karma Sutra.
