Building Bridges: A comparative approach to Roman and Medieval artefacts

a joint meeting of the Roman Finds Group and the Finds Research Group 700-1700

28-30 October 2005

Classical and Archaeological Studies

Darwin College, University of Kent

Constrained by traditional period sub-divisions, finds researchers working in the different periods rarely get the chance to exchange ideas. The conference aims to address this problem by bringing specialists together to present innovative research to a new audience. The sessions are arranged thematically, comparing methodologies and similar categories of material in the Roman and Medieval periods respectively. We hope to foster discussion, and stimulate new ways of thinking about familiar material. Questions to be addressed include the following: are there new methods being pioneered in one period that might also be applicable in another, yet which have so far been overlooked? Conversely, are there fundamental differences, for example in chronological resolution, that require contrasting approaches? How does the historical context available from textual sources facilitate or constrain artefact interpretation? Can we learn anything new from more detailed analysis of site and deposition contexts? Can cross-period comparisons bring anything new to finds interpretation?
