Inspiring Teaching Cutting-Edge Research
Lecturer in International Conflict
Dr Philip Cunliffe joined the School in 2009 after completing his doctorate in War Studies at King's College London. His doctoral research, which was funded by the ESRC, examined developing countries' personnel contribution to United Nations peacekeeping across the 1997-2007 period. He is currently working on two book projects that examine the theme of liberal intervention and imperialism from two different perspectives. One is entitled The Legions of Peace: UN Peacekeepers from the Global South and is based on his doctoral research. It is due to be published in 2012 by Hurst & Co. The second book is entitled The Legacy of Humanitarian Imperialism and will be published by Continuum in 2013.
Before taking up his position at Kent, Philip taught in the Defence Studies and War Studies departments of King's College London. Prior to his doctoral study, he completed his Master's in International Politics at Aberystwyth and read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Somerville College, Oxford University. In 2008 Philip was appointed to write monthly reports on Western Balkan politics for the Economist Intelligence Unit. He has contributed widely to the web and print media. Within the School, Philip is responsible for co-convening the School's biweekly research seminar, the weekly Graduate Research Training Seminar and for coordinating the School's website. He also convenes the 'Conflict, Security and Human Rights' research group within the School. He has been a member of the International Studies Association and the British International Studies Association (BISA) since 2008.
