Prof. Mark Smales

Professor of Mammalian Biotechnology

 

Biography

 

Prof. Mark Smales is currently a Professor of Mammalian Cell Biotechnology in the School of Biosciences at the University of Kent. The group headed by Mark has a number of on-going projects whose objectives are to further advance our understanding of biotechnological products and processes at the fundamental biological or chemical level to enable their manipulation and control for improved biotherapeutic recombinant protein yields. Mark originates from New Zealand where he completed a PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Massey University, Palmerston North. He then took a temporary lectureship position for one year in Biological Chemistry at Massey University before initially taking up a postdoctoral position at the University of Kent in 1997 in the area of biotechnology. He was appointed Lecturer in 2003 and then Reader in 2006. He is a member of the Protein Science group.
