More than a change of scenery

More than a change of scenery

A year abroad brought new challenges, new friends and unforgettable views in Innsbruck, Austria, for International Business student Emilia.

An international education

Emilia chose to study International Business as she had always had a passion for business and was interested in business on a global scale.

"Learning how firms adapt and work together in order to succeed worldwide has been super entertaining and I have loved the course so far."

Taking a year abroad was the logical next step to expand Emilia's international understanding and experience. She chose Innsbruck in Austria as she had some knowledge of German and because of the beautiful scenery.

While there, she studied International Business and Economics at the University of Innsbruck, furthering her global learning.

Inspiration in Innsbruck

"My year abroad was amazing. Innsbruck had incredible views and the city was vibrant and had many shops, restaurants and cute little cafes.

I genuinely have never loved a city as much as when I was studying in Innsbruck and there are so many different sides to the city that it suits everyone. Whether you ski, hike or stay in the city, it was always fun.

My favourite part of Innsbruck though was the people; I met so many friends from so many different countries and then also locals from Austria itself who were friendly and nice."

Becoming independent

As well as loving the scenery, people and culture in Innsbruck, Emilia also found her year abroad to be a journey of growth.

"I would say I learned a lot about myself in the year I was studying abroad for.

The most obvious would be learning properly how to be independent - living away from home at University in Kent was new, but living alone in Austria where I knew no one at all and was in an entirely different country from where I grew up was an entirely different thing.

I had to figure out so many things on my own and I forced myself to do stuff I would never have been brave enough to do before.

I would definitely recommend other students to do a year abroad. It was an experience I will genuinely never forget and there is no better time to do it than as a student."
