Putting a plan into action

Putting a plan into action.

Law student Debbie Fernandez is super organised and likes to pre-plan – she was 11 when she decided she wanted to study law and she’s been working towards it ever since!

She does though recognise that not everybody is as tenacious as she is.

‘I enjoy hunting for information and am always on the lookout for opportunities that can help me to reach my goals.’

Through her research Debbie discovered a whole range of online schemes aimed at supporting students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds into professional careers, including law.

‘Schemes such as Aspiring Solicitors can help you to access the big law firms, something it can be hard to do on your own. As well as putting you in touch with mentors, associates or lawyers who work in the ‘magic circle’ law firms, they can also put you in touch with Kent alumni. It’s really cool, you get to see what they are doing now and also hear about their time at Kent. It’s great to make those connections.’

As vice-president of Kent Law Society, Debbie wanted to raise awareness of the schemes so that the maximum number of students could benefit. She decided to create a podcast, and Kentorship Chronicles was born.

‘I started reaching out to people on LinkedIn who have been a part of these schemes and asked them if they would be on the podcast. That was the easy part, what was scarier was sitting in a room waiting for someone you’ve never met to turn up! Of course it was fine, the people I spoke to were happy to talk about their experience and were inspiring to listen to. I’ve made two good friends already.

I enjoy doing the podcast, but the best part is the number of people who’ve engaged with the podcast and our social media channels. People are interested and do care about what we’re doing. That’s really cool.’

So, if you’re not super-organised yourself, don’t worry, Debbie’s done the work for you. You can find her podcast below and follow the Law Society on Instagram.
